Kansas City, KS – One Wyandotte deputy was fatally shot, and another was critically wounded, while they were transporting an inmate to a hearing at the Wyandotte County Correctional and Court Services building on Friday morning, The Kansas City Star reported.

The incident occurred at about 11:15 a.m. in a gated area of the court services building, according to Kansas City Kansas Police Chief Terry Zeigler.

Police have said they believe the suspect may have obtained a gun from the deputies and shot them, The Kansas City Star reported.

“It is very possible that with their own firearm they were both shot,” said Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Spokeswoman Kelli Bailiff told reporters at the University of Kansas Hospital, where both deputies were transported after they were shot.

Police have not yet released the identities of the deputies, but KCFX reported that the deputy who died was male, and the wounded deputy who remained in critical condition was a female.

A suspect was also shot and transported to a hospital. There was no information available regarding the suspect or their condition.

It was not known whether the suspect was shot by one of the deputies who had been hit, or if a third deputy stepped in, KCFX reported.

A spokesman for the Kansas City Kansas PD said there was video surveillance in the area where the incident occurred. He also said police believe the incident was limited to those involved, and authorities were not looking for any additional suspects.

This latest shooting marks the fourth for Kansas City, Kansas within four years.

Wyandotte Deputy Scott Wood was shot seven times in March of 2015, as he tried to stop three people who were robbing a gas station. He was fortunate to recover, and has since returned to active duty as a deputy, according to KCFX.

Kansas City Kansas Police Officer Brad Lancaster was fatally shot near the Hollywood Casino in May of 2016. His killer was sentenced to life in prison.

Captain Dave Melton was murdered in July of 2016 while he conducted a search for armed suspects. His killer is charged with capital murder; however, prosecutors have recently announced they will not seek the death penalty in his case, KCFX reported.
