Henrico, Virginia – A woman charged with shooting a Virginia State Trooper admits she did it because she didn’t want to go to jail for driving while high.

While in jail, Karisa Daniels made that statement to a TV 8News reporter that she shot Senior Trooper C.A. Putnam who had pulled her over for driving 87 mph, according to WRIC.com.

“I was under the influence and I was extremely high and, you know, just sitting in here today I’m like, ‘What have I done?’ ” Daniels said. “They got me on a ridiculous charge of capital murder – attempted capitol murder – and I shot him in the freaking arm, you know. I wasn’t trying to kill him.”

According to Daniels’ statement to the TV reporter, she stopped her car when the officer pulled her over on the highway. But she took off and fled as soon as he got out of his car.

“And I left from where he was at and then next thing I know he’s right behind me again.”

The pursuit ended at a dead end cul-de-sac.

“The next thing I know, I heard, ‘Put your hands up. Put your hands up where I can see them.’ And then I heard ‘pop’ and I’m like, ‘OK. So he going to shoot me if I run.’ So I turned around and I shot him,” Daniels said.

State Police said Trooper Putnam never fired his weapon. And according to WRIC.com, neighbors told the TV station they only heard one shot.

Daniels tried to run away but Henrico Police caught her at a nearby home and arrested her. She is charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer and using a gun to commit a felony.

“I turned around and I shot him and that is the worst mistake I’ve ever made in my life,” she said. “I can’t believe I did something like that, but I can’t take it back.”

Daniels, who has two children, also told the TV station she is a convicted felon who was illegally carrying a gun and driving with a suspended license.
