Columbia, MD – A 64-year-old woman was killed by a dog on Monday that she had rescued two weeks earlier.

A family member reported finding Robin Conway injured in her backyard at about 7:20 p.m. Sept. 3.

The family member called 911 and tied the dog to a fence.

Police and paramedics arrived and pronounced Conway dead at the scene with significant injuries, according to WBAL-TV.

When police arrived, the dog was still tied to the fence. The dog was lunging on the leash and had to be subdued by an animal control officer.

The dog, identified as a pit bull, was then euthanized. The necropsy was to be performed on the dog to see if it had rabies or any other medical issues.

There had been no other calls to animal control about the dog, according to WBAL. The only information the police had about the adoption was that it was from out of state.

“My sister was an animal person. My sister was a caring person. When we went to make service arrangements, the person said, ‘wow, she had hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of friends,’” Conway's sister Susan LeClair said, according to WTTG-TV. “Robin gave her time and gave herself to the animals. She was wonderful.”

LeClair said her sister owned pit-bull mix breeds in the past. She said that one dog shouldn’t cast a bad light on pit bulls.

“They were pit-bull mixes, not pure breed,” LeClair told WTTG. “They were great. I have friends who have been owners of pit-bull mixes and they were great so there was something wrong, obviously, with this particular dog that is not to be taken as something to be held against all pit bulls or pit-bull mixes because there are some lovely ones out there.”
