Bloomington, IN – A woman outsmarted her armed kidnapper by driving him to the police department instead of following his demands to take him to an apartment complex.
Travis Moore, 36, was unfamiliar with the area, and didn’t realize what the woman had done until she was already running into the police station, WGN reported.
The unnamed 25-year-old woman told police that she and Moore knew each other when they were kids, and that they had recently reconnected on social media, according to WXIN.
About a week ago, she drove to Mississippi to pick him up, and they subsequently stayed in various hotels around the Bloomington area.
But they had a falling out on Saturday night when she returned to the hotel and learned Moore had locked her out.
“She said that she was then walking towards her vehicle when she saw him running behind her,” Bloomington Police Lieutenant Ryan Pedigo told WXIN.
She ran from him until she reached her car, at which point Moore closed in behind her and pointed a gun at a man waiting in the woman’s vehicle.
Moore allegedly told the man that he would shoot him if he didn’t get out of the car, she said.
As the man scrambled out of the car, the woman jumped into the driver’s seat and tried to back out.
“She said the suspect then jumped into the car with her, pointed a gun at her and ordered her to drive him to an apartment complex here in town,” Lt. Pedigo explained.
She was driving towards the apartment building when she realized that her route took her right by the Bloomington Police Department.
The woman suddenly made a U-turn, flew into the station’s parking lot, and ran inside before Moore even realized what was occurring.
“Good for her for watching her surroundings, realizing that she was passing the police department and having the courage to stop the vehicle, jump out and run,” Lt. Pedigo said.
The woman burst into the station at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, and told police what had occurred.
“The vehicle was gone when officers arrived on station so they began searching for it,” Lt. Pedigo explained. “One of the officers on patrol saw a vehicle that matched the description she provided officers.”
They pulled Moore over and arrested him on charges of intimidation, kidnapping, possession of a handgun without a license, vehicle theft, and driving while suspended.
Moore admitted that he had a gun earlier in the night, but said he had discarded it, according to police.
The firearm has not been recovered.
Investigators later learned that Moore was a wanted fugitive out of Louisiana for offenses involving the sale of a gun with an obliterated serial number and assault with a firearm, WXIN reported.
He has additional charges pending out of Johnson County for public intoxication and driving while suspended, and is wanted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
