Columbia, S.C. – A woman who falsely claimed she was assaulted by a man at a Walmart was charged for lying to the police.

Kristen Rimes, 26, told police a man assaulted her in a Walmart parking lot and that he tried to take off her pants and she hit her head on the pavement on Nov. 26, according to WLTX.

Rimes posted about the fake incident on social media which caused “public concern,” according to the Columbia Police Department. A police investigation revealed that Rimes was never at that Walmart on the night she reported the incident.

Rimes was charged with filing a false police report and false swearing to police in December and booked at the Richland County Detention Center, according to WLTX.

The Cola Daily reported on the incident on Nov. 27. Rimes provided two photos of herself with a bruised face and cuts above both of her eyebrows that were published in the newspaper.

According to the Cola Daily, Rimes said she was leaving a restaurant at 11:30 p.m. and pulled into the Walmart so she could type an address into her phone’s GPS.

Her car was in park when she said she heard a voice say, “Hey girl,” which Rimes said she ignored.

Rimes claimed her attacker “was a black male, medium build, wearing a hoodie with a jacket over it,” according to the Cola Daily.

She said moments after the attack, it took her a second to realize she had been mugged. Rimes told the newspaper her immediate thought was to get home to her two young children.

“I wanted to get home and get out of there,” Rimes told the Cola Daily. “I went first thing Monday morning to file the police report to pull camera footage, which I am so mad at myself for not calling them that night. I think I was in such shock.”

The Cola Daily reported that Rimes spoke to them after she posted her account of the fake attack on Facebook.
