Yakima County, WA – A Yakima County sheriff’s deputy was shot multiple times while helping a woman involved in a domestic violence incident early Tuesday morning, according to investigators.
Deputies with the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO) responded to a home on South Fork Road in Ahtanum after receiving a report of a domestic disturbance at approximately 1:15 a.m. on Aug. 1, Yakima County Sheriff Robert Udell said in a press release later in the day.
One of the deputies was at the front of the home, assisting a woman who was involved in the incident, when a 34-year-old male opened fire on him, according to Sheriff Udell.
A 51-year-old YCSO deputy was hit three times by the suspect’s gunfire, Sheriff Udell confirmed.
His partner was able to pull him to safety and administered first aid before he was rushed to Memorial Hospital in Yakima.
Meanwhile, law enforcement officers from the Washington State Patrol (WSP), Zillah Police Department (ZPD), Union Gap Police Department (UGPD), and the Yakima Police Department (YPD) responded to the YCSO’s request for help at the scene.
The gunman was ultimately apprehended without force or further incident, Sheriff Udell said.
Investigators confirmed the same suspect had also been involved in the domestic violence incident.
The wounded deputy was listed in serious but stable condition at Memorial Hospital on Tuesday.
“His injuries are considered serious, but his condition is stable, and he is expected to recover,” Sheriff Udell said.
The identity of the wounded hero was not immediately released.
“We are shaken up around the office and thankful the situation wasn’t worse,” YCSO Spokesperson Casey Schilperoort told The Seattle Times. “Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for our office, our deputies, and other professional staff. This incident affects our entire office.”
The unidentified suspect was booked into the Yakima County Jail on pending charges.
The YPD is handling the ongoing investigation.
