Baltimore, MD – A video went viral of a student who punched an unsuspecting teacher in the face on Wednesday (video below).

The Baltimore City Public Schools stated it was investigating the incident that happened at Frederick Douglass High School, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The video was posted to Instagram and shows two students arguing and standing near a teacher.

Then one of the students pushes the other student aside and unleashes a haymaker that hits the teacher on the left side of the face.

In the video, after the punch the student responded, “Don’t f–king get smart with me.”

The teacher said, “I didn’t get smart with you,” before leaving the classroom behind the student. The Baltimore Sun reported the video had been viewed more than 60,000 times in less than a day.

WBAL identified the teacher as a chemistry teacher who is also a “respected elder at a church.” The teacher was not in class on Thursday.

According to the Baltimore Sun, Baltimore City schools Spokeswoman Edie House-Foster said, “school administrators will apply disciplinary action in accordance with Baltimore City Public Schools’ Code of Conduct.”

House-Foster added, according to the Baltimore Sun, “Ensuring a safe teaching and learning environment for our students and staff is paramount to City Schools.”

The head of the Baltimore public school teachers union called the video, “absolutely deplorable.”

“Our teachers and paraprofessionals work too hard and sacrifice too much of their time, creativity and genuine love for teaching to be treated in such a manner by anyone, including their students,” Baltimore Teachers Union President Marietta English said, according to the Baltimore Sun. “

Of course, I was very angry when I saw that because we’ve asked that there be some kind of support for our teachers, and something needs to happen,” she said.
