Lakeland, FL – A Florida man was charged with attempted second-degree murder after he chased down a man who stole beer from his gas station and shot him (video below.)
Rennie Defoe Jr. entered the Shell gas station at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday and can be seen on surveillance video walking in and taking about $36 worth of Natural Ice beer and walking out without paying, according to The Ledger.
Mehedeun Hasan, who co-owns the business with his father, Q.M. Monsur Raham, went and grabbed a 9mm pistol from the store office and then went outside to confront Defoe.
The security video showed Defoe tossing the beer into the passenger seat side of the 2005 Toyota Camry and then closing his door and attempting to drive off while Hasan pointed the gun at him.
Defoe drove off and Hasan shot at him, The Ledger reported. Defoe eventually crashed his vehicle less than a mile from the gas station.
He was taken to the hospital for treatment of a single gunshot to the left arm and chest.
He was listed in critical condition, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
Hasan, 22, was arrested on Wednesday. He was also charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle.
Hasan had no prior criminal history.
Defoe, 43, has 12 prior felony charges as well as nine prior misdemeanor charges, according to The Ledger.
Defoe’s priors include firing a missile into a dwelling, domestic battery, grand larceny, grand theft and distributing cocaine within 100 feet of a school.
Defoe has been sent to Florida State Prison four times and was released from prison on June 12.
