Chicago, IL – A woman with a concealed carry license fatally shot an armed attacker during a confrontation at a bus stop early Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred in the Fernwood neighborhood at approximately 5:45 a.m., as the 25-year-old woman was waiting to catch a bus to work, WLS reported.

As she was waiting, a man in a light-colored jacket suddenly approached her and attempted to rob her at gunpoint.

The woman was knocked to the ground during the brief physical altercation that ensued.

She then drew her own weapon, and shot her attacker once in the neck.

He was later identified as 19-year-old Laavion Goings.

Goings was able to strip the weapon away from her, then fled the scene, WMAQ reported.

The woman took off in the opposite direction, security footage from a nearby drugstore showed.

Police located the attacker about a block away from the robbery, and transported him to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said that the woman suffered a minor injury, but will be fine, WLS reported.

“All I heard was ‘pop!’” witness Cedric Dumas told WLS. “Bus this is normal for around here…He forgot that people around here carry guns, and you will get popped. And he got popped.”

“He got what he deserved,” said Shonta Hodges, who also lives in the neighborhood. “He ran up on the wrong person, so she did what she had to do.”

The victim’s preparedness likely saved her life, another neighbor said.

“I’m glad that she had concealed carry and good aim, because there is so much going on in these streets,” the Fernwood resident told WLS.

“I’m glad she fought back,” another woman told WBBM. “I’m glad that we’re not reading about her on a slab somewhere.”

“If they pull a gun on you, they intend to hurt you in some way, or take everything that you have worked for,” she added. “We don’t owe the offender anything.”
