Raleigh, NC – Protesters blocked government vehicles and assaulted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents who arrested an undocumented immigrant on Friday (video below).
Samuel Oliver-Bruno had been hiding in the CityWell United Methodist Church in Durham for almost a year while he petitioned for his deportation to be delayed, The News & Observer reported.
When he went to an appointment at the Morrisville ICE offices to be fingerprinted on Nov. 23, he was arrested, WNCN reported.
Rev. Ruiz-Millan told WNCN that Oliver-Bruno had been living illegally in the United States since the mid-90s and things were fine until he decided to go back home to Mexico to visit.
When he wanted to return to his home in Greenville when his wife was having heart surgery, Oliver-Bruno tried to cross the border back into the United States with fraudulent documents.
He was caught and arrested, and only allowed back into the country for federal criminal prosecution.
Oliver-Bruno was convicted in the U.S. District Court for the Western District in 2014, The News & Observer reported.
“Given he had completed his federal sentence, he had been released from federal criminal custody in June 2014, he came into this agency’s custody at that time and was subject to removal at that time. However, due to a variety of appeals and acts of discretion he was not removed,” ICE Spokesman Bryan Cox explained.
Oliver-Bruno stayed in the United States and appealed his deportation, but eventually went into hiding at the Methodist church, WNCN reported.
Church officials claimed that ICE had coordinated to arrest Oliver-Bruno when he came in for his appointment, but Cox said there are no “appointments” for wanted fugitives.
“Mr. Oliver-Bruno is a convicted criminal who has received all appropriate legal process under federal law, has no outstanding appeals, and has no legal basis to remain in the U.S.,” Cox said.
The video of the arrest at the ICE service center showed Oliver-Bruno present himself on Friday with more than 30 supporters inside and outside the ICE offices to back him up.
When he identified himself inside the offices, ICE agents arrested him on the spot.
The video showed that his son, Daniel Oliver-Perez, jumped into the fray and assaulted at least one ICE agent as he tried to prevent the officers from arresting his father.
As a result, Oliver-Perez was also arrested.
The video also showed the melee that occurred when ICE agents attempted to transport Oliver-Bruno, and then his son Oliver-Perez, from the ICE facility.
ICE agents loaded Oliver-Bruno into the vehicle behind the facility, but when it attempted to exit the parking lot, the video showed the illegal alien’s supporters became aggressive protesters.
In the video, several plain clothes ICE agents can be seen physically struggling with protesters as they attempted to get inside the vehicle, and then stopped the vehicle from moving entirely.
The video showed one man had to be pulled from the open driver’s door where he was clinging to the agent driving and the steering wheel as the siren blared.
Once the doors to the vehicle were secured, protesters surrounded it, with some of them even climbing onto the hood, the video showed.
ICE officials remained calm, and even attempted to explain to the protesters what was happening, but the video showed they screamed and yelled over him.
Morrisville police responded to a call about a crowd preventing ICE from transporting an arrestee at about 9:15 a.m., The News & Observer reported.
When police loaded Oliver-Perez into a car on charges of assault on an ICE officer, protesters surrounding the police car, screaming and yelling, the video showed.
Officers arrested 27 protesters who refused multiple orders to disperse during the incident.
