Lucasville, OH – A newly-released video showed a brutal knife attack on four prisoners inside the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville (video below).

The footage from a surveillance camera inside the prison showed the moment when inmate Greg Reinke got up from his table in the recreation area and attacked four other inmates with a seven-inch shank on June 4, 2017.

Authorities declined to charge Reinke at the time because he was already serving a life sentence, according to WJW.

Then the same inmate was involved in a knife attack on Correctional Officer Mathew Mathias in the prison infirmary on Feb. 20, 2018.

Correctional Officer Mathias was stabbed 32 times and suffered numerous internal injuries as a result of Reinke’s attack, WJW reported.

The near-fatal attack on a correctional officer brought the security problems at Lucasville to a head.

Although authorities had initially opted not to charge Reinke for the attack on his fellow inmates, newly-elected Scioto County Prosecutor Shane Tieman had a different plan, according to WJW.

Tieman said decided to charge Reinke with both prison attacks to send a message inside the facility that such crimes won’t be tolerated in the Lucasville prison.

He said that Reinke’s victims, regardless of why they were there in prison, deserved justice.

“These victims deserve their day in court too,” Tieman told WJW. “To say, ‘This was done to me,’ and for us to stand up and say, ‘It is not right, what was done to these victims.’”

Authorities recently released a video of the attack on the inmates that showed Reinke attacked, and tried to kill, four inmates who were chained to a table playing a card game.

Reinke either slipped out of his handcuffs, or was not shackled to the table where he was seated, the video showed.

He had two homemade knives on him when he attacked the inmates, WJW reported.

The video showed it took correctional officers more than one minute to respond to the incident and rescue the inmates who were being attacked.

When the correctional officers arrived, it took another three minutes for them to unshackle the wounded inmates.

Prison Spokeswoman JoEllen Smith said the delay was because their chains “became entangled when inmates were moving around during the attack.”

As a result of the incident, the Lucasville facility stopped shackling multiple inmates to tables, WJW reported.

The Ohio Civil Service Employees Association, the union that represents the correctional officers, reached an agreement with the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in April that increased security measures for moving dangerous inmates.

But the spokesman for the union said despite additional security steps they’re taking to increase safety, nothing is perfect.

“There’s no such thing as an inmate being locked in a cell, no matter what the security status is, for 24 hours, seven days a week,” Christopher Mabe said. “That’s not what we do.”
