Houston, TX – A pregnant woman just two weeks away from giving birth was able to protect herself and her unborn child by pulling out her own gun when an armed robber targeted her outside a Houston gas station on Tuesday afternoon (video below).
The incident occurred outside a convenience store located in the 8600-block of Fulton at approximately 5 p.m. on June 27, KPRC reported.
A pregnant woman was sitting inside her vehicle while her husband ran into the store when two armed men suddenly approached her, according to police.
The woman immediately called her husband and told him she believed she was about to be robbed, KPRC reported.
Security footage showed the woman standing outside her vehicle with her husband while a man in a pink shirt pointed a gun at them from the driver’s side of a van.
The video did not have any sound.
The pregnant woman began digging in her purse as she watched the suspect walk towards her and her husband.
The suspect then appeared to hit her husband, knocking him out of the frame, the video showed.
That’s when the woman opened fire on their attacker.
The suspect scrambled away and fell to the ground while a second vehicle allegedly involved in the incident sped off.
As the woman’s husband held the suspect at gunpoint, the armed assailant tossed his gun away and laid on his stomach on the pavement, the video showed.
Police later confirmed both the woman and her husband were armed at the time of the attack, KPRC reported.
They were both holding the suspect at gunpoint when officers arrived at the scene, the Houston Police Department (HPD) said in a press release.
Police ultimately determined the victims acted in self-defense.
The couple was uninjured during the incident and their unborn child is expected to be okay.
A family member told KPRC this will be the woman’s first child and that she is due to give birth in the next couple of weeks.
The wounded suspect was transported to a local hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.
He has been identified as 39-year-old Mario Ipina Duque, KPRC reported.
Duque was charged with unlawful carry of a weapon and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
He remained hospitalized on Wednesday, KPRC reported.
Houston police said they are still searching for the suspect who was in the green Dodge Charger that fled the scene.
