Bountiful, UT – The Bountiful Police Department has released pawn shop surveillance footage that showed a deadly encounter between two armed robbers and an armed pawn shop owner (video below).

The incident occurred on May 4 at approximately 10:51 a.m., as the unnamed Bountiful Pawn store owner wheeled a bike towards the business’s open front door, surveillance footage showed.

As the owner reached the door’s threshold, he was suddenly intercepted by two men. One of the men thrust a gun into the owner’s face, backing him into the store.

The robber’s accomplice then swept in behind him with a bag and a hammer, and walked out of the camera’s view.

As store owner lowered the bike onto its side on the floor, the gunman held him at gunpoint and moved back towards the front door to close it.

With his hands raised, the owner stepped away from the distracted robber, and scurried into a side room while simultaneously drawing a firearm from what appeared to be his waistband.

The suspect abandoned his attempt to close the door and rushed in after the shop owner, who immediately opened fire.

The robber continued his attack, and the men fell to the ground as the struggle ensued.

“There’s an exchange of gunfire there and ultimately, the suspect continues after the shots have been fired, attacks the store clerk until the suspect succumbs to his wounds,” Bountiful Police Lieutenant Dave Edwards told KSTU.

A second later, the suspect’s accomplice hopped over a counter and fled from the business.

When the store owner emerged from the side room, his right hand was covered in blood, the video showed.

The would-be robber, 40-year-old Kleydys Arbolaez-Hernandez, died at the scene, The Sacramento Bee reported.

His accomplice, 30-year-old Alexyanis Cutino Jimenez, was apprehended in Houston, Texas, in late May, following a nationwide manhunt, police said.

Investigators said they believe Arbolaez-Hernandez and Jimenez committed a string of at least 10 robberies within the state of Utah between January and May.

They are also suspected of having committed additional robberies in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, police said.

“We can see in other videos detectives obtained in Oklahoma the same weapon was used, the same clothing. That was one of the things that tied the case up for us,” Lt. Edwards told KSTU.

Jimenez has since been federally charged with 11 counts of using a firearm during a violent crime and 11 counts of robbery, the Deseret News reported.

Investigators said that the pawn shop owner was “obviously defending himself” when he shot Arbolaez-Hernandez, and that he will not face any charges.
