Banning, CA – A Banning police officer was hospitalized with “serious injuries” after he was bodyslammed by a combative teen at a high school football game, police said (video below).

A second suspect also attacked the officer, and choked him as he laid on the ground.

The incident occurred at approximately 10:45 p.m. on Aug. 24, while the school resource officer was working at the Banning High School football game, the department said in a press release.

School security personnel contacted the officer after a 17-year-old male instigated a fight, and said they wanted the teen removed from the premises.

“Once the officer made contact with the patron, he immediately disregarded the officer’s commands to leave,” the department said. “Due to the fact the patron would not cooperate, the officer attempted to arrest the patron.”

But as the officer began to take him into custody near the concession stand, the teen grabbed him around his waist and lifted him off of the ground, cell phone footage of the violent incident showed.

As the teen threw him backwards, they both fell onto the concrete.

“He bodyslammed him,” Banning Detective Mike Bennet told KCBS.

“Several witnesses came to the aid of the officer and school staff was able to detain the patron who assaulted the officer,” the department said in the press release.

When they reviewed footage of the attack, investigators realized the officer was also assaulted by a second male as he “laid on the ground… unable to protect himself,” the agency said. “The suspect is seen grabbing the officer by his throat before being removed by witnesses that assisted the officer.”

The officer appeared dazed in the wake of the attack, and struggled to his feet with the help of witnesses, the video showed.

“The officer was hurt,” Det. Bennet told KCBS. “It was a very scary situation for him.”

He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries. Police have not yet released the officer’s name.

The second assailant fled the scene, police said.

He is described as a “dark-skinned white male or possible light-skinned Hispanic male,” with a tattoo on the inside of his right wrist, according to the press release.

Det. Bennet told KCBS that police are also looking for another individual seen wearing red in the video – a black male with dreadlocks who goes by the name of “Dada.”

The 17-year old suspect arrested at the scene has been charged with assault on a police officer with great bodily injury, according to the department.

The officer was discharged and is now at home recovering as of Tuesday night, KCBS reported.
