Yuba City, CA – A Sutter County sheriff’s deputy is being hailed as a hero after his off-duty intervention in a violent domestic dispute was caught on camera, and went viral (video below).
In the video, which was shot by a witness from across a Walmart parking lot, a woman can be seen struggling to get out of the driver’s side door of a vehicle, while a man inside has a hold on her.
The video showed the woman continued fighting her captor as a Good Samaritan, in the form of the off-duty deputy, ran up to help.
In the video, the deputy approached the driver door of the vehicle with his weapon drawn, and appeared to assist the woman in breaking away from the man who held her.
As soon as she crawled away, the angry man emerged from the car and went after the deputy.
The man, who was dressed entirely in black and appeared to be at least a full head taller than the deputy, shoved the deputy, the video showed.
The video showed the deputy was able to gain control of the man within seconds by pointing his weapon toward him.
The man ran away after the incident, but the off-duty deputy stayed at the scene until police arrived.
There is a warrant out for the man’s arrest, according to KTXL.
Witness Karina Ross thanked the off-duty deputy for his heroics.
“It was mixed emotions, afraid for them and then also like proud of (the deputy). That he did his duty even though he was off duty,” Rios described watching the video to KTXL.
Others agreed that the deputy had gone above and beyond the call of duty.
“Lately, cops in the media cops have gotten a really bad rap,” Steven Dale told KTXL. “Off duty he could have just nonchalantly kept going but he stopped and did his job and waited.”
Dale applauded the fact that the officer hadn’t shot the man who had been attacking the woman.
“He definitely knew handgun safety and did the right thing,” he said.
The Sutter County Sheriff’s Office said the deputy in the video preferred not to be identified, KTXL reported.
