Maywood, CA – A 64-year-old high school teacher was arrested for pummeling a 14-year-old student who stood next to him in class and repeatedly used racial slurs and mocked the teacher (video below).
Video was captured by the other students showing what happened before the fight.
Students told KTLA that the fight started at about 1:30 p.m. Friday. KTLA reported that the students were sympathetic towards the teacher and that the 14-year-old student had taunted him and pushed him to the edge.
Music teacher Marston Riley asked the 14-year-old to leave the classroom because he wasn’t wearing a proper uniform. The student refused to leave and then challenged Riley and used profanity and used racial slurs when mocking Riley, who is black.
Then the student threw a basketball at the teacher. Riley then pulled out his cell phone to call for help.
However, the student continued to insult and provoke the teacher and the teacher didn’t react until he clocked the 14-year-old in the face.
In one video, the 14-year-old student calls the teacher a “b—h” and says, “You ain’t gonna do s—t” and added, “you a ho a-s b—ch’ before Riley threw the first punch that appeared to stun the student and had him back peddling.
The teacher’s third punch connected and the student fell down on his back. When the student got up, Riley continued with the attack and stalked the 14-year-old who was again back peddling.
The teacher corned the student against a wall with chairs and when the 14-year-old ducked and grabbed the teacher’s leg, Riley began pummeling the student in the head with what appeared to be his cell phone about a dozen times as classmates screamed and watched.
Eventually, some of the students tried to intervened and separated the two but Riley continued after the 14-year-old.
The teacher and student exchanged punches again and another student held back the 14-year-old by the door while the teacher backed off.
Eventually, some adults showed up and took control of the classroom as Riley asked the surrounding students, “Who hit me? Who hit me?” The video showed the teacher was hit by another student while on top of the 14-year-old.
The student was taken to a hospital and he was treated for moderate injuries and released, according to the Los Angeles Times. Riley was arrested and booked at a local sheriff’s station after he posted $50,000 bail, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Riley was booked on charges of suspected child abuse and causing great bodily harm on a child, according to KTLA. He is scheduled for arraignment on Nov. 30.
The investigation is being conducted by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Bureau.
The Los Angeles Unified School District said it was “extremely disturbed” by the incident, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“We take this matter very seriously and do not condone violence or intolerance of any kind,” the statement read, the Los Angeles Times reported. “Los Angeles Unified is cooperating with law enforcement in investigating this incident.”
The Los Angeles Times reported that there was much public support on social media for the teacher and the student was out of line using racial slurs directed at the black teacher.
There was a GoFundMe page started for the teacher that had raised $18,000 by Sunday evening, the Los Angeles Times reported.
KNBC reported that some parents were angry over the teacher beating up a student in class. “Just the fact he’s hitting a child is not right,” one person told KNBC who was not identified and whose face was not shown.
