Muskogee, Oklahoma – Police released video of a man carrying a large knife was shot by a police officer after he repeatedly ignored orders to put the knife down and not approach the officer (video below.)
Sean Ellis could be heard saying “Thou shall not kill” in the video when he took a few steps toward Officer James Moore who then shot Ellis three times with two bullets hitting him in the abdomen, according to the Tulsa World.
Ellis was taken to the hospital and was listed in stable condition.
The shooting happened at August 7. A citizen had alerted Officer Moore about a man in a red shirt and cowboy hat who was acting strange and reported to be possibly carrying a gun.
The video was captured by a camera mounted on Officer Moore’s glasses.
In the video, Ellis ignored repeated commands by the police to raise his arms and to stop walking.
“Sir, let me see your hands now,” the police officer said in the video while Ellis continued walking.
“Do not pull that knife,” the officer ordered as Ellis pulled the knife out.
“Drop the knife,” the officer said as Ellis continued walking away with the knife in his hand.
Ellis ignored four more commands by the officer to drop the knife before he turned around and confronted the officer while stepping towards him.
The officer repeated numerous times for Ellis to drop the knife and to not move closer to him. When Ellis ignored and started walking toward the officer, he was shot.
Knives are deadly weapons and anybody who refuses orders to drop a knife, and then makes a move towards officers, is likely to be shot.
Moore was placed on routine paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
