Pasco County, FL – A man used a deputy’s Taser against him during a violent struggle, and got ahold of the deputy’s gun before good Samaritans who stopped to help subdue him.

The incident began when Pasco County Deputy Darren Goodwald tried to stop a grey Dodge Caravan with license plates that tracked back to a different vehicle, WFTS reported.

The driver of the Caravan, 30-year-old Bryan Stephen Roque, jumped out of his vehicle after he was stopped, ran around a home, and then returned to his minivan.

That’s when Roque backed his vehicle up and struck the deputy’s patrol vehicle, WFTS reported.

After the crash, he jumped out of his own vehicle again and went to try and steal another nearby vehicle, but the Nissan he’d targeted was locked.

Police said Deputy Goodwald tackled Roque and attempted to take him into custody. During the struggle, the suspect was able to take the deputy’s Taser, according to WFTS.

Roque pulled the trigger and zapped himself and the deputy with the Taser, incapacitating them both.

As soon as he had regained control of himself after the shock from the Taser, Deputy Goodwald reached for his gun and found Roque in the process of trying to take it from him, WFTS reported.

The deputy desperately screamed for help.

That’s when good Samaritans jumped into the fight to help subdue the suspect.

A second deputy arrived and deployed his Taser on Roque, allowing them to take the suspect into custody, according to WFTS.

One of the Good Samaritans said he was home from work sick and heard what was happening outside his house.

“Don’t matter if it was a deputy or not, just somebody asking for help, so I went and helped,” Jose Bernal told WFTS.

But the man’s quick and selfless reaction garnered praise from the deputy he assisted.

“There’s a lot of good citizens in this county that are willing to stand up and do what’s right even if it puts them in harm’s way,” Deputy Goodwald gratefully told WFTS.

Roque was arrested and charged with aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, carjacking, resisting an officer with violence, grand theft, depriving officer of means of protection or communication, and driving while license is suspended or revoked, WFTS reported.
