Ogden, UT – A man accused of kidnapping a woman was fatally shot by police officers on Friday after the suspect opened fire on the police.

Police responded to a report of a kidnapping after the victim approached police at 6:10 p.m. and asked for help.

The woman told police she had been kidnapped earlier in the evening. The woman met Galvan online and had a relationship with him and Galvan moved to Utah. The woman then ended her relationship with Galvan.

She woke up Friday for find him at her house, where he held her against her will for the entire day, according to KSTU.

Ogden Police Chief Randy Watt said that Galvan alternated between homicidal and suicidal thoughts when he was holding the woman hostage, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

The woman drove Galvan around and then he exited the vehicle at an intersection and started to walk away. When he was gone, the woman flagged down the police officer and told her about what happened and that Galvan was armed.

Police got a description from Galvan and located him. But Galvan pulled his weapon and opened fire as soon as he saw police.

Galvan was destroyed when police returned fire.

No officers were hit, but their vehicle was shot.

“We’re grateful our officers are unharmed, and we’re proud of the courage and dedication they showed in ending this life-threatening confrontation,” Chief Watt said, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

Galvan was wanted on warrants in Denver, Colorado and El Paso, Texas, according to police. He had an extensive criminal history, police said, which included felony kidnapping, assault, child abuse, assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon and theft.
