Bexar County, TX – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has released harrowing aerial footage of a gunfight between a motorist and a trooper (video below).
The incident took place on Feb. 18, when an unnamed DPS trooper pulled a vehicle over for a traffic violation in Guadalupe County, KSAT reported.
The driver, later identified as 33-year-old Ernest Manuel Montelongo, provided the trooper with a false name, then fled the scene, DPS spokesperson Sergeant Deon Cockrell told KSAT at the time.
During the pursuit that ensued, the trooper lost sight of Montelongo, but a DPS helicopter soon located the suspect traveling into oncoming traffic on Interstate 10 in Bexar County.
The helicopter footage showed Montelongo as he opened his driver’s side door while traveling past “wrong way” signs leading onto the interstate.
“Head’s up guys, he looks like’s he’s getting out,” an officer cautioned over the radio. “Be careful…taking up a defensive position.”
One of the troopers parked his patrol vehicle across the roadway, placing himself between the gunman and oncoming traffic, the video showed.
As the trooper approached the suspect’s vehicle with his weapon drawn, Montelongo jumped out of the car and opened fire.
“Shots fired, shots fired, troop down,” an officer broadcasted from overhead.
A second trooper on the ground then fired at the suspect, who was hit and immediately dropped to the ground.
A handgun was clearly seen lying on the ground next to him.
A trooper rushed up and kicked Montelongo’s weapon away.
Meanwhile, the law enforcement officer that Montelongo shot was seen bleeding heavily from his right arm.
Blood pooled on the ground and saturated his uniform, as another trooper swiftly helped secure a tourniquet on his injured arm.
The trooper was airlifted to the hospital, and survived his injuries, KENS reported.
Montelongo succumbed to his gunshot wound the following day, Sgt. Cockrell told KSAT.
