Philadelphia, PA – Video captured the terrifying scene as a gunman wearing a ballistic vest opened fire in Philadelphia on Monday night, killing five and wounding three children (video below).

The incident began at about 8:30 p.m. on July 3 at the intersection of 56th Street and Chester Avenue in the Kingsessing neighborhood, WPVI reported.

The suspect, wearing a ballistic vest and carrying a police radio, opened fire on pedestrians and people in cars with an AR-15 style semiautomatic rifle.

Officials said the shooter fired at least 50 rounds during his rampage.

Police said it did not appear that any of the victims were targeted, WPVI reported.

Surveillance cameras nearby caught video of the shooter opening fire on a street corner and firing with abandon.

Officers responded to the scene at the report of gunfire and found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police said that officers were loading victims into their patrol vehicles to quickly transport them to the hospital when gunfire erupted down the block, WPVI reported.

The officers bravely ran toward the sound of gunfire and chased the suspect down.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said the gunman opened fire on officers as they chased him, the New York Post reported.

Police said officers cornered Carriker in a rear alley in the 1600-block of Frazier Street, WPVI reported.

He surrendered without incident once he was trapped, according to Commissioner Outlaw.

Authorities said the gunman was also carrying multiple loaded magazines of additional ammunition and a handgun when he was apprehended.

Police said they have no motive for the random attack that left 15-year-old Daujan Brown, 22-year-old Lashyd Merritt, 29-year-old Dymir Stanton, 31-year-old Joseph Wamah, and 59-year-old Ralph Moralis dead, WPVI reported.

A two year old and a 13 year old were also shot and wounded during the rampage, according to police.

Another two year old and a 33-year-old woman were seriously injured by flying glass, WPVI reported.

Police said the woman was the mother of the twin two-year-old boys and her car came under fire as she drove through the intersection where the gunman was shooting.

Officials have not yet released the identity of the shooter but sources told WPVI that police arrested 40-year-old Kimbrady Carriker, who lived just a few blocks from the shooting scene.

Carriker posted multiple pictures of himself on his Facebook page while dressed as a woman, according to the New York Post.

He also regularly shared gun-themed memes and posted in support of Black Lives Matter.

A few days before the shooting, he posted a video of children at a gun range to his social media, the Daily Mail reported.

In May of 2020, the suspect posted a video to his Facebook of a burning Philadelphia police car and captioned it, “I was there; where were you? #we matter,” the New York Post reported.

It was unclear whether Carriker filmed the video himself.

Philadelphia court records showed that Carriker was arrested charged with possession of a weapon without a license, carrying a firearm in public, and drug possession in 2003, the New York Post reported.

He ultimately pleaded guilty to having a firearm without a license and prosecutors dropped the remaining charges.

Carriker was sentenced to three years of probation and more than $1,000 in fines and costs, the New York Post reported.

Prosecutors have not yet announced any charges for the July 3 mass shooting.
