Volusia County, FL – The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office (VCSO) has released video footage that captured a roadside shootout between an attempted murder suspect and several law enforcement officers on Monday (video below).

Dillon Parker, 33, was wanted in connection with a Nov. 10 shooting in DeLeon Springs, during which 33-year-old Daniel Dekman was critically wounded, the VCSO said in a press release.

Parker was wanted for felony battery, attempted murder, and aggravated battery with a firearm, and also had an active warrant for a bond revocation in connection to an earlier charge of fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement, the department said.

At approximately 3 p.m. on Nov. 19, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office notified Volusia County deputies that Parker was behind the wheel of a gold sedan and heading into Volusia County.

Shortly after he was spotted by a VCSO deputy driving in his direction, Parker “veered toward his patrol vehicle, forcing him to swerve out of the way,” the department said.

After running the deputy off the road, Parker continued traveling south down U.S. Highway 17 until the deputies flattened his tires with stop sticks.

His vehicle soon slowed and rolled into a ditch, according to the press release.

Parker jumped out of his disabled vehicle and began shooting at the deputy just a moment before Deputy Wesley Blum pulled up to the scene.

Bodycam footage showed Deputy Blum as he fired approximately seven rounds at the suspect through the windshield of his patrol vehicle before his cruiser had even come to a stop.

A DeLand Police Department officer, who happened to be traveling through the area while on his way work, also engaged the shooter, and fired several rounds at him with his rifle, the VCSO said.

Parker ultimately tossed his weapon to the side as the officers closed in on him.

He had been shot in the leg and chest, and was airlifted to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

Parker remains in critical condition, but is expected to survive, according to the department.

None of the law enforcement officers were injured during the shootout.

Two deputies and one DeLand police officer have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, as per protocol.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is handling the ongoing investigation.

“They’re going home tonight to their families. That’s the most important thing,” Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in the press release.

“… These guys did what they had to do today,” the sheriff added. “They certainly didn’t come to work to shoot somebody. But the person that they were trying to take down and arrest clearly wanted to make sure that they didn’t go home to their families.”

DeLand Police Chief Jason Umberger said he was glad his officer was able to help the deputies to stop a violent criminal.

“I’m very proud of his effort and the effort of these Volusia County deputy sheriffs,” Chief Umberger said in the press release.

“Every day, we have law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to take into custody dangerous felons like this. And you can see today how violent he was. He was not going to surrender. He was going to try to take out police and kill police officers,” he continued. “So, thank God their training kicked in and they were able to take him into custody.”

Parker’s criminal history includes 11 felony arrests for offenses including burglary, robbery, and theft, WFTV reported.

He was convicted of seven of those felony offenses, and has been sent to prison three times.
