The Colony, TX – Police have released dashcam video of a terrible wreck that resulted when another driver failed to yield for an emergency vehicle on June 1 (video below).

A police lieutenant and the rookie officer he was training were both injured in the rollover crash when a car struck them as they were responding to a call for burglary in process, KTVT reported.

“The patrol unit slowed as it approached the red lighted intersection at Paige Road and SH 121,” The Colony Police Department said in a statement, according to My Texas Daily. “When cars yielded to the patrol unit operating in emergency mode, the patrol unit slowly entered the intersection and was struck by a passenger car causing the patrol unit to roll onto its roof.”

In the video, the training officer can be heard giving instructions to the new officer driving the police SUV.

“So when you get up to this intersection, hit you sirens,” he instructed.

“Okay,” she replied.

“Turn it on now, and when we get through these lights, and then we can turn it off again,” he told her.

The video showed the driver followed instructions as the patrol unit proceeded down the road and approached the series of two intersections located one after another.

The driver slowed the police vehicle as she approached the first intersection, and then drove carefully across it without any problems, the video showed.

“Let’s just make sure everybody stops,” the lieutenant coached the officer as she approached the second intersection, and then proceeded slowing into it.

The police unit was halfway across the intersection when the lieutenant saw a fast-approaching vehicle and tried to warn the driver.

“Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, STOP!” he said as a vehicle slammed into the driver’s side door of the SUV, causing it to flip over and land on its roof.

“Oh no, L.T. I’m so sorry,” the rookie officer said, sounding heartbroken, as their vehicle came to a stop on its roof.

The training officer was trapped inside the vehicle for a short period after the collision, KTVT reported. Witnesses assisted in freeing him from the wrecked, upside-down SUV.

Police cited the wreck as an example of why drivers need to slow down for emergency vehicles.

“All of a sudden ‘wham’ and the next thing you know you’re upside-down,” The Colony Police Sergeant Dave Fitzpatrick said. “I just encourage everybody to follow the law and yield to the emergency vehicles, because they may be going to a call that’s involving one of your relatives or friends.”

Both officers and the driver of car that struck the police SUV were transported by ambulance to an area hospital and treated for minor injuries, My Texas Daily reported.

“A big thank you goes out to the citizens who helped the officers and the other driver involved escape from the wrecked vehicles,” the police department’s statement read.

The driver of the vehicle that struck the police SUV was cited for failing to yield to an authorized emergency vehicle, according to My Texas Daily.
