Bellingham, WA – Bellingham PD used pepperballs to detain a naked man who was hanging in front of an apartment window (video below.)

The incident happened at around 3:08 p.m. Saturday in the 800 block of Viking Circle, according to Bellingham Herald.

Officers responded to a report of a fight, but arrived to find a naked man who appeared to be having a mental health crisis.

Twitter user @jess_Y_esiki posted a video with the description: “this dude at my complex was masturbating outside his window, so the cops came and put some shots on his sack. #bellinghome”

However, Bellingham police say that the man was not actually sexually gratifying himself. They say that he was just grabbing his genitals for non-sexual purposes.

“Most of the information on the Twitter feed is inaccurate and speculation,” Bellingham Police Lt. Claudia Murphy said, according to Bellingham Herald. “This individual was having a medical/mental crisis and was sans clothing in his own apartment.”

Officers first attempted to communicate with the man as he knocked out his own screen window, but he did not cooperate.

Fearing that the man was a danger to himself or others, the officers deployed their pepperballs.

“When all verbal efforts did not achieve the desired result, the pepperball delivery system was deployed,” Murphy said, according to Bellingham Herald. “This delivered pepperballs into the apartment to release an irritant powder in order to encourage the young man to exit.”

The naked man did not initially exit. When he returned to hang out the window again, officers deployed pepperballs again to keep him back.

Eventually, the man was detained and transported to the hospital for a psychological examination.
