Wilmington, NC – Local reporter Hannah Brewer drove by Family Dollar in Wilmington Friday to see what appeared to be a mass looting of the store.

Following reports of the looting, the police department responded that they have been asked not to intervene.

"We are aware of the looting occurring at the Family Dollar Store at 13th & Greenfield Sts, unfortunately management has asked not to intervene at this time," the department said in a tweet on Saturday.

The city has announced that in response to the looting, they will be placing an extended curfew in effect in the area where looting is heaviest.

WECT reports that earlier in the week, District Attorney Ben David said he was clearing out room at the jail to make room for any looters.

"There is a vacancy sign on our jail," David said at the time. “We have room for people who are going to show the worst in humanity during this. If that means going into unoccupied homes because people have left or looting property that’s exposed to the elements or price gouging that comes in the wake of clean up,"

The DA advised the police department to aggressively pursue looters, however there's nothing that police can do if the property owner's won't cooperate.

David says that they will attempt to identify people from the video.

"We’re going to do everything we can to protect your property. This is not a response to the video, this has been our message before the storm arrived," David told WECT. "This conduct does not speak for the people in that community."
