Louisville, KY – Bodycam footage captured the moment when an armed suspect wearing a mask was fatally shot by the undercover police officer he allegedly attempted to carjack (video below).

The incident began at approximately 1:34 p.m. on June 19, as Louisville Metropolitan Police Department (LMPD) Fugitive Unit officers were searching for a shooting suspect in the area of Griffiths Avenue and 22nd Street in the Portland neighborhood, WLKY reported.

The target, 23-year-old Rex Wright, was wanted in connection with a non-fatal shooting that occurred on May 28.

Kentucky State Police (KSP) Public Affairs Commander Captain Paul Blanton said in a critical incident briefing on Thursday that undercover LMPD Fugitive Unit Officer Matt Hayden was sitting in a vehicle parked in an alley near North 22nd Street and Griffiths Avenue conducting surveillance when an armed suspect wearing a mask walked up to his car.

Bodycam footage showed the suspect walking in front of the officer’s vehicle and heading for the driver’s side.

Capt. Blanton said the suspect opened the driver’s side front door of Officer Hayden’s vehicle and pointed a gun at him.

Officer Hayden identified himself as “police” and pointed his fire arm at the suspect as a barrage of gunfire erupted, the video showed.

The suspect fell backwards onto the grass, dropping his gun, and complied with the officer’s commands to show his hands.

“Shots fired, shots fired!” Officer Hayden alerted over the radio as he jumped out of his car.

“F—k! What is your deal, bro?” he asked the wounded suspect.

A woman began screaming at the officer in the background a moment later.

“That’s my baby daddy!” she yelled. “Did you just shoot my baby daddy?”

A second officer arrived at the scene and they worked to calm the hysterical woman while emergency medical personnel responded.

The officers then rendered emergency aid to the wounded suspect.

The gunman was subsequently rushed to the University of Louisville hospital, where he was pronounced dead, WAVE reported.

He was later identified as 21-year-old Mark Jaggers, according to WHAS.

The officer, a 10-year LMPD veteran, was not injured during the incident, WDRB reported.

The KSP Critical Incident Response Team is handling the ongoing investigation into the fatal officer-involved shooting, Capt. Blanton confirmed.

The gunman’s father, also named Mark Jaggers, denied allegations his son was trying to carjack anyone, WDRB reported.

He said his son saw the car sitting in the alley, figured it was stolen, and just wanted to take it out for a joyride.

“That car was sitting here for three hours,” the elder Mark Jaggers told WDRB. “My son thought it was a stolen car.”

He said stolen vehicles are often left abandoned in the area where the incident occurred.

“My son thought it was a dumped car,” he reiterated to WDRB. “I know it’s still illegal, I know. But it’s not worth getting shot over.”

Wright, the suspect the undercover officers were originally searching for that day, turned himself in to police hours later, WDRB reported.

He has been charged with six counts of wanton endangerment and one count of assault in the unrelated case.
