Tonitown, AR – A citizen’s cell phone video captured a gunfight on Sunday after a suspect opened fire on a Washington County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) deputy during a traffic stop (video below).

The incident began at approximately 12:43 p.m. on Nov. 11, when WCSO Corporal Brett Thompson attempted to stop the driver of a 2008 Saturn for a traffic violation, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported.

The driver, later identified as 29-year-old Luis Cobos-Cenobio, initially refused to pull over.

Cpl. Thompson pursued him onto Steele Road, where Cobos-Cenobio eventually stopped, KFSM reported.

But when Cpl. Thompson exited his vehicle, Cobos-Cenobio got out of his car and opened fire on the officer.

Ryan Smithson was traveling “directly behind” the corporal’s cruiser when he pulled the suspect over, Smithson’s wife, Julie Smithson, wrote in a Facebook post.

By the time Ryan crouched down next to his vehicle and started to record the gunfight was already underway.

After firing multiple rounds at his attacker, Cpl. Thompson began swiftly moving backwards towards Ryan’s vehicle, the video showed.

Gunfire rang out again, then the corporal radioed for additional units.

Cobos-Cenobio sped away from the stop, but soon slowed just enough to let a female passenger out of the car before he took off out of sight.

The woman was immediately detained by police, and has since been released.

A short while later, a Springdale police officer spotted the suspect’s vehicle near the intersection of Thompson Street and Don Tyson Parkway, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported.

The gunman began shooting at the officers, who also returned fire.

“Several [shots] is an understatement,” witness Mike Jones posted on Facebook, according to KFSM. “I was sitting at Casey’s when he came through the first time and had a shootout with the cops. I’m guessing 30-40 shots fired.”

“I watched the back window of the [vehicle] they were shooting at, I watched it shatter,” another witness told the news outlet.

“The front of one of the cop cars, their front windshield got busted out with a gunshot and then after that there were cops everywhere,” the witness added.

Cobos-Cenobio led officers on a pursuit through Fayetteville and into Springdale, then ultimately circled around and pulled over back near the intersection of Thompson Street and Don Tyson Parkway, where he surrendered, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported.

According to a probable cause affidavit, he told officers he “wanted to die,” KFSM reported.

Cobos-Cenobio was transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, and was treated and booked into jail.

No law enforcement officers were injured during the altercation.

Investigators later found marijuana and two pipes inside Cobos-Cenobio’s Saturn.

The Arkansas State Police are handling the ongoing investigation, the Northwest Arkansas Democrat Gazette reported.

Cobos-Cenobio has been charged with four counts of attempted capital murder, fleeing, committing a terroristic act, drug paraphernalia, and possession of a controlled substance, according to the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.

A United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) spokesperson confirmed that an ICE detainer was also placed on Cobos-Cenobio, but could not discuss specifics about his status.

Cobos-Cenobio is scheduled to appear in Washington County Circuit Court on Dec. 10.
