Salt Lake City, UT – Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill has determined that the officer-involved shooting of Patrick Harmon, 50, on August 13 was legally justified. Body camera footage of the shooting has been released (multiple videos below.)

“Activists” are now leaving out the details of the shooting and spreading low-quality body camera footage from the worst angle in an effort to convince people that the shooting was unjustified. Activism writer Shaun King called the shooting a “brutal execution.”

Before the investigation was complete, KUTV 2 news reported that Harmon was a “victim” of a police shooting.

The incident happened on August 13 when Patrick Harmon was stopped at night for riding a bike across all six lanes and the median of State Street without a rear red tail light, according to Salt Lake Tribune.

The officer asked Harmon for identification, and instead he provided a name that did not have any match in any law enforcement or licencing department database. Harmon then gave a couple of different names after the officer asked for clarification.

Harmon told the officer that he might have a felony warrant.

The officer then called for additional officers to assist him.

The officer located a record on Harmon which shows that he had multiple outstanding warrants, including a felony warrant for aggravated assault. The warrant was issued after Harmon had pleaded guilty to the felony, and did not show up to his sentencing hearing.

Harmon also had an outstanding warrant for a probation violation.

When two additional officers arrived, they told Harmon that he was going to be arrested for his warrants.

As the officers placed Harmon’s hands behind his back, he bolted and ran.

The officers pursued while one officer drew his Taser and Officer Clinton Fox drew his gun. While running, Harmon began to dig in his pocket while telling the officers that he would cut them, according to the prosecutor.

As Harmon started to turn towards the officers with a knife in his hand, Officer Fox shouted, “I’ll fucking shoot you!” before firing three shots while the other officer fired his Taser.

Officers provided first aid to Harmon before he was transported to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

All three officers had their body cameras on, and the footage showed Harmon turning towards officers before the shooting.

The shooting report notes that Fox felt “terrified by how close Mr. Harmon was to the officers.”

Officer Fox told investigators that he could see the open blade in Harmon’s hand. The body camera footage shows that Officer Fox was within lunging distance of Harmon at the time he fired his weapon.

“Fox said that in ten years of law enforcement and two military deployments, it was the scariest situation he had ever been in,” according to the report.

The day before the prosecutor announced that the shooting was justified, there was a protest by activist groups calling for the body camera footage to be released.

Now that the footage has been released, people are ignoring the part where Patrick Harmon turned towards officers. The knife is not clearly visible in the dark and blurry body camera footage, but it appears at one point he used his left hand to open the knife which he was holding in his right hand.
