Stockton, CA – Harrowing bodycam footage captured the moment when a Stockton police sergeant was shot in the chest while chasing an armed carjacker early Wednesday morning (video below).

The incident began at approximately 3 a.m. on Aug. 2, when the Stockton Police Department (SPD) received a report of an armed carjacking in the 700-block of Bedlow Drive near Tam O’Shanter Drive and Hammer Lane, The Stockton Record reported.

The victim, a 69-year-old man, was beaten with a firearm during the attack, according to police.

He was transported to the hospital with “moderate to severe injuries,” SPD Spokesperson David Scott told The Stockton Record.

Officers responded to the area and soon found the stolen silver Lexus GS 300 about three miles away in a residential area near Weberstown Park.

Investigators said one SPD sergeant was near Kentfield Drive and Gateway Court when the alleged carjacker opened fire on him, The Stockton Record reported.

Bodycam footage showed the bullets ripping through the windshield of the sergeant’s patrol vehicle as he frantically radioed for help.

“Shots fired! Shots fired!” he yelled repeatedly. “I’m shot! I’m taking rounds!”

The sergeant did not return fire, according to The Stockton Record.

SPD Chief Stanley McFadden said the sergeant was shot “square in the chest” multiple times, KCRA reported.

“It’s a call that no parent, no chief no one wants to get in the middle of the night,” Chief McFadden said. “Had an officer down. That is a gut-wrenching call that you don’t want to hear.”

He said the wounded hero is expected to survive and that his ballistic vest likely saved his life.

“He’s eager to get back to work but he has got some healing to do,” Chief McFadden said.

The identity of the sergeant, who has been with the SPD for nine years, was not immediately released. KCRA reported.

A SWAT team responded to the scene of the attack and locked down the residential area, according to The Stockton Record.

They honed in on an apartment building near Gateway and Kentfield and proceeded to evacuate neighbors.

Other residents were instructed to shelter in place, The Stockton Record reported.

Police had at least five people detained by approximately 10 a.m.

They have since identified the alleged gunman as 20-year-old Sunthawon “Benny” Savon, KTXL reported.

Savon was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on charges related to attempted murder, carjacking, fleeing from a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of a stolen vehicle, according to KCRA.

Savon was previously arrested on weapons-related charges after a run-in with Stockton police in January.

It is unclear whether the three or four other individuals who were detained will face charges, but police said they have all been released from custody, KCRA reported.

Chief McFadden said the wounded sergeant was in good spirits when he met with him at the hospital.

The chief said he also met with the carjacking victim, who is continuing to recover, KCRA reported.
