Readington Township, NJ – Scotch Plains Police Officer Stephanie Roggina seemed to have trouble believing that she was being arrested after leading an officer on a pursuit while intoxicated. Video of the traffic stop has just been released (below.)

The incident started August 26 at around 11:30 PM when a Readington Police Lieutenant observed the 26-year-old off-duty first-year Scotch Plains officer’s car stopped at a stop sign for around 90 seconds, according to The Trentonian.

The lieutenant finally activated his emergency lights and Roggina responded by driving off.

The  lieutenant pursued Roggina for one minute before she finally pulled over. During the pursuit, Roggina swerved in her lane and struck a guardrail, and used her right turn signal to signal a left turn.

Once she did stop, the  lieutenant ordered her out of the car, and she failed to comply.

“Are you serious?” Roggina slurred out. “Are you kidding me?”

“You don’t take off from a cop,” the lieutenant told her. “Are you out of your mind?”

“I didn’t take off from a f—ing cop,” she responded. “I was not running from you.”

Stephanie Roggina then tried to suggest that she shouldn’t be arrested because she was a police officer in Scotch Plains.

“Well, then you should know better, right?” the  lieutenant said.

“Obviously,” Roggina said. “Please don’t, seriously…. Do you think I’m lying to you … that I’m a cop?”

“Well, what do you want me to do about that?”

Roggina was charged with third-degree eluding, driving while intoxicated, obstructing passage of other vehicles, reckless driving, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, and leaving the scene of a crash.

After the arrest, she was suspended without pay. Her current employment status was not reported.
