Queens, NY – A gunman murdered a random 86-year-old man and wounded three others during a half-hour-long shooting spree in Brooklyn and Queens on Saturday (video below).
New York City Police Department (NYPD) Detective Bureau Assistant Chief Joseph Kenny said the attacks began shortly after 11 a.m. on July 8, when police received a report about a 21-year-old male victim who had been shot in the shoulder near Arlington Avenue and Ashford Street, The New York Times reported.
The wounded victim was transported to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center and is expected to recover, according to WABC.
Additional 911 calls came in just 17 minutes later about another victim who had been shot near 109th Street and Jamaica Avenue, The New York Times reported.
The attack occurred in the Richmond Hill neighborhood in Queens, just four miles away from where the first victim was wounded.
Security footage showed 86-year-old Hamod Ali Saeidi walking down the sidewalk as a man on a scooter pulled up alongside him and began shooting him in the back.
Blood soaked the elderly victim’s shirt as he spun around and crouched over in the wake of the horrific drive-by attack.
Saeidi, a father of six who was walking to a mosque to pray at the time of the shooting, did not survive, the New York Post reported.
“My heart is broken,” his son, Ahmed Alsaedi, told the New York Post. “My family is all devastated. We can’t believe something like that would happen to an 86-year-old man. It’s terrible.”
Police were still at the scene of the deadly shooting when they received reports about yet another attack, The New York Times reported.
That shooting took place near Jamaica Avenue and 108th Street, approximately one block away from where Saeidi was gunned down.
Police said the gunman fired on a group of people, but that no one was struck, The New York Times reported.
But the gunman’s rampage continued.

Eight minutes after the attack on the group of people on Jamaica Avenue, a 44-year-old man was shot in the face near Hillside Avenue and 126th Street, The New York Times reported.
Assistant Chief Kenny said the victim was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in critical condition.
The suspect opened fire on a 40-year-old man near Jamaica Avenue and 131st Street about one minute later, but he was not hit, The New York Times reported.
Yet another attack occurred about eight blocks away just a minute later, according to police.
Jorge Balseca, 63, was shot in his right shoulder during that incident.
His wife said he was crossing to street to go run errands when the gunman opened fire on him, The New York Times reported.
Balseca was transported to a local hospital for treatment and was listed in stable condition on Sunday.
Police used security footage and statements from witnesses to trace the gunman’s route, according to Assistant Chief Kenny.
Witnesses at the scene of each attack said the gunman was riding a scooter when he opened fire, police said.
Investigators ultimately honed in on 25-year-old Thomas Abreu, who was apprehended at the intersection of 94th Avenue and Sutphin Boulevard at 1:10 p.m. on Saturday – roughly two hours after the first shooting occurred, The New York Times reported.
Abreu was allegedly carrying a 9mm “ghost gun” with an extended magazine at the time of his arrest, according to the New York Post.

A motive for the shooting spree is unknown.
“If you look at the demographics and pedigree of the victims, they’re all different,” Assistant Chief Kenny said, according to ABC News. “Video shows that he’s not targeting anybody, he’s not following anybody. As he’s driving on his scooter, he’s randomly shooting people.”
Abreu has been charged with Saeidi’s murder, The New York Times reported.
He has also been charged with criminal possession of a weapon and attempted murder in connection with the shooting of the 40-year-old victim and the attack on the group of people near Jamaica Avenue and 108th Street.
Additional charges may be forthcoming.
