Chicago, IL – A 14-year-old boy intervened and fatally shot a man who violently attacked his mother at a food stand last month (video below).

The incident occurred at the Maxwell Street Express restaurant located in the 11600-block of South Halsted Street at approximately 11 p.m. on June 18, WTTW reported.

Carlishia Hood, 35, went into the restaurant to place an order that night while her 14-year-old son waited for her outside in their blue Lincoln Nautilus, according to USA Today.

While she was inside, Hood ended up in a verbal confrontation with 32-year-old Jeremy Brown.

It is unclear what triggered the argument, but investigators said Hood and Brown did not know one another prior to the incident, WTTW reported.

Cell phone footage recorded by a bystander showed Brown yelling at Hood to get her food.

“If you say one more thing, I’m going to knock you out,” he threatened at one point.

Brown then proceeded to punch Hood repeatedly in her face and head, the video showed.

A gunshot rang out just before the clip ended.

Cook County States Attorney Kim Foxx’s office said Hood had texted her son during the argument and told him to come into the business, USA Today reported.

The teen allegedly entered the restaurant, pulled a gun from the pocket of his hoodie, and shot Brown once in the back, according to WTTW.

Prosecutors further alleged Hood yelled at her son to kill Brown, even as Brown took of running out of the restaurant.

They said the teen chased after Brown and continued shooting at him.

Brown was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene, USA Today reported.

Prosecutors alleged Hood also told her son to shoot a woman who was inside the restaurant laughing while the argument between her and Brown had been taking place, but the teen refused to comply with her order, according to WTTW.

Foxx’s office said the boy pushed his mother away when she tried to pry the gun out of his hands.

Hood and her son were subsequently arrested for first-degree murder, according to WTTV.

The teen’s mother was also charged with one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Her bond was set at $3 million.

Hood had a valid firearms owner’s identification card and a concealed carry permit at the time of the shooting, according to USA Today.

Foxx’s office has since dropped the charges against both Hood and her son due to “continued review and in light of emerging evidence,” WTTV reported.

“Based upon the facts, evidence, and the law we are unable to meet our burden of proof in the prosecution of these cases,” the state’s attorney’s office said in a statement on June 26.

Hood later filed a lawsuit against the City of Chicago and five members of the Chicago Police Department (CPD), alleging malicious prosecution, false arrest, and emotional distress, USA Today reported.

“I’ve experienced pain in many ways that I would never have thought,” Hood said after the charges against her and her son were dropped. “What happened to me was totally unnecessary. Never in a million years would I have imagined being brutally attacked, beaten and being arrested.”

The CPD declined to comment on the case due to pending litigation, USA Today reported.

A hearing on the lawsuit is scheduled to take place on Aug. 31.
