Long Beach, CA – A former Lakewood High School English teacher has been convicted of sexually abusing one of her female students in a BDSM sexual relationship over a three-year period.

According to the victim, her teacher introduced her to hot wax, flogging, bondage, and carved her initials into the student’s hip beginning when the girl was 15 years old, the Press-Telegram reported.

Mary Jahn, 53, pleaded no contest to a single count of lewd act with a child on Nov. 9, just before opening statements in her trial were set to begin.

As part of the plea agreement, two additional charges of lewd acts on a child, two counts of oral copulation of a person under 18, and four counts of sexual penetration by foreign object were dismissed.

During Jahn’s preliminary hearing in May, the victim testified that her English teacher began paying extra attention to her after the student wrote an essay about being romantically attracted to a girl online, the Press-Telegram reported.

Jahn and the student first had sex in 2009, when the girl was 15 years old, the victim testified.

During their sexual encounters in the several years that followed, the teacher flogged the girl, introduced her to hot wax, tied her up, and carved her initials into the student’s hip, according to the victim.

The alleged incidents all occurred at Jahn’s residence.

Jahn also commonly took the victim along on family vacations, along with Jahn’s wife and children.

The former student said she began distancing herself from Jahn when she turned 19.

In 2015, one of the victim’s friends told Lakewood High School administrators about Jahn’s relationship with the student in a letter, without the victim’s knowledge.

According to the victim, the school district questioned Jahn – who denied the allegations – but didn’t investigate further.

The victim said she wasn’t ready to disclose what had happened to her at that time.

A school district official would not confirm or deny that administrators received a complaint about Jahn, the Press-Telegram reported.

“The school district investigates all allegations of wrongdoing,” spokesman Chris Eftychiou told the paper.

“To protect the integrity of those investigations, and in order for witnesses to speak confidently with district officials about their concerns, we can’t communicate the contents of those confidential complaints,” Eftychiou added.

In May of 2017, the victim finally told police about her sexual encounters with her former teacher, after having confided in another friend about what had transpired.

“The more that I talked, the less that I could defend her anymore and the more I started to see things clearly,” the victim testified.

Jahn was placed on leave from Lakewood High School on May 11, 2017. She had taught at the school since 2006.

Prosecutors said Jahn is no longer a teacher at Lakewood High.

As part of her plea agreement, Jahn faces a maximum of three years in prison and a sexual offender designation when she appears for sentencing on Nov. 30.
