Decatur, GA – A victim of an attempted robbery shot three of his attackers Friday in a busy shopping center parking lot in the middle of the day.
Three men, including one of which who was armed with a gun, followed a man and woman to a Kroger parking lot where police think they planned to rob or carjack the victim at 4:15 p.m.
The victim had a gun, however, and was able to shoot three suspects in an exchange of gunfire, according to WAGA-TV. The victim wasn’t shot nor any bystanders.
“It was like the Wild Wild West. I was terrified,” said Angela Key, who was sitting in her car as it was struck by several bullets, according to WAGA.
Key said one of the suspects used her car as a shield and Key ducked for cover, too, before driving away.
“I’m just glad I’m safe,” Key said.
Numerous witnesses said they heard gunshots and a commotion. One wounded person entered into Kroger and the workers called 911, according to WAGA.
“There was a trail of blood. He dragged himself into Kroger. It was awful, awful,” one customer told WAGA.
WSB-TV’s news helicopter reported that it spotted a handgun in the parking lot.
Police transported two men with bullet wounds to an area hospital.
Crime scene tape surrounded the parking lot Friday night and traffic was diverted away from the Kroger.
“We believe that there may have been some sort of crime that was intended to happen at that time, whether it was a robbery or a carjacking, we really don’t know right now,” said Shiera Campbell of the DeKalb County Police Department, according to WSB. “There was a great risk of people being shot and a great risk of being killed. People are lucky that no one else was hit.”
