New York, NY – A Bronx public school teacher admitted she performed oral sex multiple times on a 14-year-old boy, but she will not have to go to prison or surrender her teaching license.
Dori Myers, 29, was a social studies teacher at The New School for Leadership and the Arts in the Bronx.
She pleaded guilty to a criminal sex act, a felony that requires her to register as a sex offender, according to the New York Post.
Myers, who is the wife of a Rockland County sheriff’s office, entered her plea Wednesday.
Prosecutors had asked that Justice Michael Orbus give Myers two years in prison and order her to surrender her New York state teaching certificate, the New York Post reported.
Defense lawyer Andrew Stoll said that Myers will by fired by the city but asked the judge to allow Myers to keep her teaching license, the New York Post reported.
Judge Orbus gave her 10 years of probation and allowed her to keep her teaching license.
“I just want to make the record clear that Ms. Myers is aware that she must register as a sex offender,” Orbus said, according to the New York Post.
“There is a possibility that she could teach adults now or in the future and we want to preserve that possibility,” Stoll said, according to a court transcript obtained by the New York Post. “She still is a talented teacher and has those skills, and I don’t see any reason to destroy her ability to make a living and to contribute to society in a positive way.”
The New York Post reported that the state Education Department usually reviews these types of cases to determine whether to revoke a license, and they could potentially revoke it.
Police learned about Myers’ crime after the 14-year-old boy told a friend of his who then went and told a school administrator.
Myers was arrested Jan. 19 and initially pleaded not guilty.
