Murphy, NC – A former North Carolina high school teacher has been indicted on five counts of sexually assaulting a student, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office announced on Friday.

Kayla Sprinkles, 26, taught social studies at Andrews High School during the 2016-2017 academic year, and was also a cross country and softball coach, the Daily Star reported.

The allegations came to light on or about Mar. 26, the Cherokee County Sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.

Police executed “several search warrants” and interviewed “numerous individuals” during the course of the investigation, and concluded that Sprinkles “had engaged in sex acts with a student while employed as a teacher in a high school for the Cherokee County Schools System,” the department said.

Heavy reports that the victim was 16 years old.

The information was presented to the Cherokee Grand Jury on June 4, and resulted in a five-count indictment for sex activity with a student.

“Apparently Sprinkles gained knowledge, possibly through a social media posting, of the existence of the indictments and left from the local area and surrendered herself to the Mecklenburg County Detention Center” on June 7, the sheriff’s office said.

She was subsequently released on a $25,000 unsecured bond.

“Our youth and our students are one of the greatest resources that Cherokee County is blessed to have,” Sheriff Derrick Palmer said in the post. “It is incumbent upon all of us to ensure their safety and wellbeing as they grow and mature.”

No further details regarding the allegations against Sprinkles were disclosed.

“Due to the nature of the crime and the age of the victim no further information will be released concerning this incident,” the department said.

Sprinkles was scheduled to appear in Cherokee County Superior Court on July 2.
