Cross Lanes, WV – A middle school teacher and former Miss Kentucky was arrested Thursday and accused of sending nude photos to a 15-year-old student.
Ramsey Bearse, 28, was charged with four felony counts of sending obscene material to a minor, according to WTVQ.
Andrew Jackson Middle School listed Carpenter as an eighth-grade science teacher.
According to a criminal complaint, the student’s parent told police about the naked photos that were found on the student’s phone, according to the Washington Times. Bearse was the boy’s teacher while he was at Andrew Jackson Middle School.
WCHS reported that Kanawha County Schools released a statement that read, “We cannot comment on personnel matters, but we will follow all applicable policies and procedures. The safety and security of our students is our top priority.”
The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office said that Bearse was suspended from her teaching position. She was released on a $10,000 property bond, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Police said that Bearse admitted to sending the photos on Snapchat, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.
A Kanawha County Magistrate Court Judge told Bearse that she faced up to 20 years in prison and a $100,000 fine. Bearse declined comment to reporters at the county court. Her attorney didn’t respond to a request for comment.
Bearse won the 2014 Miss Kentucky contest when she went by her maiden name of Carpenter. She graduated from the University of Kentucky.
Bearse took up playing the fiddle as a teenager and started performing with older musicians at venues in Kentucky and created her own persona as a fiddle player, according to the Washington Post.
“I have been known as the ‘Girl with the Green Fiddle’ a lot longer than I’ve been known as Miss Kentucky,” Bearse said in 2014 during the Miss America competition, according to the Washington Post.
