Tucson, AZ – An Arizona man had his ankle shattered by a man who attacked him from behind because he was wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat popularized by President Donald Trump and carrying a pro-Trump sign.

Jonathan Sparks said he felt someone grab on to his MAGA hat and pull him back by his hair, according to KVOA.

Sparks said the suspect jumped onto his ankle and broke it into four pieces.

Sparks grabbed his ankle and then tried to grab his MAGA hat and both of them fell to the ground, Sparks said.

“Then I heard the words Hitler, Nazi and Trump. He was shouting things like that,” Sparks said, according to KVOA. “He came over the top of me and over and over again, he hit me.”

Witnesses came over and pulled the attacker off of Sparks, he said. The bystanders held the suspect until the Tucson Police Department arrived. Police say the incident happened Nov. 4.

Daniel Brito, 42, was arrested for robbery and taken to jail, according to Tucson Police Department Officer Ray Smith. He was later released, according to the Pima County Jail.

Sparks said his assault would have been treated a lot different if he had carried an anti-Trump sign, “a rainbow sign, or I was a black guy which then, I think there would be a sea of reporters here.”

KVOA published a photo of one of the pro-Trump signs that read: “Jobs not mobs, vote Republican this Tuesday.”

Sparks is recovering from surgery after he spent 20 hours in the hospital, according to KVOA.

“I was attacked with vengeance by an evil man but you know what I learned, you know what God taught me through the whole thing? How wonderful Tucson is,” said Sparks, according to KVOA. “There were people who pulled him off, paramedics who stayed with me there is a police officer that protected me.”
