Payson, UT – A man crashed an airplane into his own house, turning the home into a fireball, just hours after he was arrested for domestic violence (video below).

Payson police identified the pilot of the plane as 47-year-old Duane Youd, KSTU reported.

The tragic string of events began when Youd was arrested for domestic violence at about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday evening, after he allegedly assaulted his wife in American Ford Canyon.

“They had been drinking. He assaulted her and witnesses saw this happening,” Payson Police Sergeant Noemi Sandoval told the Deseret News.

Deputies arrested Youd and booked him into the Utah County Jail at about 9:20 p.m. on suspicion of assault.

Youd was released on bail just after midnight on Aug. 13, and returned to his home on East Canyon Road at the mouth of Payson Canyon to collect some of his belongings and his truck, under the supervision of the Payson Police Department, KSTU reported.

That went without incident, according to officers who were on the scene. Youd calmly left the residence, and his wife and adult stepson stayed there.

“There was no argument here at the home,” Sgt. Sandoval said

Police said that’s when Youd – an experienced pilot – went to the Spanish Fork Airport. Once there, he helped himself to a jet-powered airplane he had access to because it was owned by a company he flew for part-time for, KSTU reported.

He got into the airplane and flew it directly to his residence, police said.

KSTU reported that on his flight path to the house, Youd barely missed hitting some power lines. But he did clip a shed and strike a car that was parked in front of the residence, and then the plane bounced and flew into the home, where it erupted into a massive fireball.

Youd’s wife and her adult son were inside the home when the plane hit, police said.

“There were two individuals in the home at the time that the plane went in,” Sgt. Sandoval said. “They were able to get out of the home without any injuries. Obviously they were very shook up over what had happened but they weren’t physically injured.”

Sgt. Sandoval told the Deseret News it was a “miracle” that both of the people in the home had escaped unhurt.

After the initial explosion, the entire house became engulfed in flames quickly, before fire crews could arrive and save any part of it.

Youd was killed and the airplane was destroyed, too. All that remained was sitting in the front yard of the house next to the burned-out shell of the vehicle it had struck.

“There was a significant fireball, so there’s not a whole lot left of the plane itself,” Sgt. Sandoval told KSTU.

Public records indicated that Youd bought the home with his wife last year, and that he resided there.

Police said there had been previous domestic incidents at the home, KSTU reported.

Youd was arrested for disorderly conduct in April and pleaded guilty on July 23, taking a plea in abeyance to the same charge, according to the Deseret News.

Court records showed that Youd was also ordered to attend marriage and family counseling.
