Rochester Hills, MI – A special education teacher from Rochester High School was arrested after she was accused of partying and having sex with two underage students.

The investigation began on Jan. 8 after a parent found a video of students partying with 26-year-old Kathryn Houghtaling, according to a report from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

A student took the video to school administrators and they called the police, the Detroit Free Press reported.

When officers questioned Houghtaling about the allegations, she admitted she had engaged in sexual activity with a 16-year-old male student and a 17-year-old male student in November and December of 2018, the Detroit Free Press reported.

One of the incidents occurred inside a car with other students present. A second incident took place at a student’s home.

Police said that none of the sexual interludes occurred on school property, according to the Detroit Free Press.

One of the students the teacher was involved with was assigned to her classroom at Rochester High School.

Houghtaling, who had been working for Rochester Community Schools since August of 2018, was promptly fired by the school district.

“The safety and welfare of our students and staff is always our primary concern,” Superintendent Robert Shaner told the Detroit News in a statement. “We are thankful for our partnership with the Rochester Police Department, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, and our security consultants who help us in our efforts to keep our children safe.”

Houghtaling was arrested on Jan.11 and charged with six counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The charges are felonies that carry a prison sentence of up to 15 years.

Judge Lisa Asadoorian ordered that Houghtaling be held on a $200,000 cash bond.

Asadoorian told Houghtaling not to have contact with anyone involved with her case and banned her from going on any public school property.

She also told Houghtaling not to leave Michigan, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Houghtaling’s release conditions also prohibit her from using or possessing alcohol or marijuana and any illegal drugs, and said she must submit to random drug testing.

Court records showed the Houghtaling was released on bond on the same day she was arrested, the Detroit Free press reported.

She is required to be connected to a GPS electronic monitoring tether per the judge’s release instructions.
