Chicago, IL – More than 100 protesters rushed the doors of Mount Sinai Hospital emergency room on Sunday demanding to see the dead body of 15-year-old Steven Rosenthal.

The Chicago Tribune reported that protesters yelled “Let us see Steve!” and chanted “No justice, no peace!” as they scuffled with hospital security that was blocking the doorway.

But Rosenthal’s body wasn’t even at the hospital.

He had been transported to the medical examiner’s office after he was pronounced dead on Friday, police said.

The shooting occurred just after 7 p.m. on Aug. 17 after officers spotted Rosenthal with a weapon and tried to question him, FOX News reported.

Police said Rosenthal ran from the officers and then shot himself in the head shortly thereafter, the Chicago Tribune reported. He died at his home in the 1500-block of South Keeler Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood.

The medical examiner ruled Rosenthal’s death a suicide from a gunshot wound to the head, according to the Chicago Tribune.

But the teen’s family doesn’t believe them and said they had witnesses who claimed to have seen officers kill him.

“Steven was on the stairwell of his grandmother’s house on the West Side of Chicago when police officers stormed up the stairwell chasing,” Andrew Stroth, an attorney for Rosenthal’s family, said during a press conference that preceded the protest. “Within moments, these officers, without cause or provocation, shot and killed 15-year old Steven. … Based on several eyewitness accounts, these officers ended the hopes and the dreams of a talented young man with a bright future.”

However, ballistics and body camera footage show that none of the officers fired their weapons, and physical evidence showed that Rosenthal shot himself, according to CBS News.

Rosenthal’s aunt, Terinica Thomas-Level, called out Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel during the press conference, and demanded the release of the officers’ bodycam footage from the incident.

“My 15-year old nephew Steven was shot and killed by the Chicago Police Department,” Thomas-Level claimed. “I need the attention of Mayor Emanuel. I need to see evidence. Bodycams. They need to release the video. My nephew would never commit suicide ever.”

“If he [Emanuel] even had the smallest compassion for our family, he’d get those videotapes released,” she said.

“The medical examiner has not released Steven’s body,” the family’s attorney said. “The family is demanding to see the body, the family is demanding to see the evidence, the family is demanding to see the supposed, alleged weapon that was on the scene. The family deserves justice, and that’s what the family is fighting for.”

But Chicago Police Spokesman Michael Carroll told the Chicago Tribune that the police department “has not come to a point where the decision has been made to release the bodycam video.”

Carroll said the shooting was still under investigation, and that he was not aware of any formal complaints alleging police misconduct having been made by Rosenthal’s family.
