Somers, NY – A prominent New York City oncologist allegedly shot her four-month-old baby to death before killing herself inside her $1 million home on Saturday morning.

Police said the shocking murder-suicide took place 40-year-old Dr. Krystal Cascetta’s home on Granite Springs Road on Aug. 5, The Journal News reported.

Cascetta’s husband, 37-year-old Timothy Talty, was away at the time, but Cascetta’s parents were at the couple’s home that morning.

“A preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 7:00 a.m., Krystal Cascetta entered her child’s room and shot her baby and then turned the gun on herself,” the New York State Police (NYSP) said in a press release, according to FOX News.

The infant is believed to have been a little girl between four and five months old, according to the news outlet.

“We know, 100 percent, without a doubt, that it was a murder-suicide,” NYSP Trooper Steven Nevel told NBC News.

A witness told investigators they heard a gunshot and ran to the infant’s room because they initially thought someone had fallen, Trooper Nevel said.

Just before the witness reached the room, they heard a noise that ended up being the second gunshot, the trooper explained.

The witness tried to enter the room, but the door was locked, Trooper Nevel told NBC News.

The witness then broke the door down and found Cascetta and the baby dead inside the bedroom, he said.

A motive is unknown.

The NYSP described Cascetta as a “renowned oncologist,” FOX News reported.

She worked at Mount Sinai Hospital, where she specialized in helping breast cancer patients.

Cascetta was also an assistant professor of oncology and hematology at Mount Sinai’s Icahn School of Medicine, as well as chief of the Mount Sinai Queens Infusion Center, which treats cancer and blood disorders, The Journal News reported.

“The Mount Sinai community is greatly saddened by the tragic loss of a Mount Sinai Health System doctor and her child. We extend our deepest sympathies to Dr. Cascetta’s family, friends, colleagues, and patients,” the hospital said in a statement to FOX News.

Cascetta graduated from Albany Medical College and completed her residency at Hofstra North Shore LIJ School of Medicine at North Shore University Hospital.

She and Talty married in 2019 and moved into their $1 million Somers home in 2021, FOX News reported.

Talty is the founder of Talty Bars, a line of protein bars, which Cascetta endorsed, according to The Journal News.

Her bio on the company’s website outlined her path to becoming an oncologist, which began when her friend’s mother died of breast cancer when they were in the eighth grade.
