Salinas, CA – A family has finished cleaning their porch and bleaching their doorknobs after finding security video of a man licking their doorbell for hours (video below).
“Well he came up, and if I remember correctly, he peered into Ring lens of the camera, and then turned and began to lick – almost incessantly – the doorbell from the old intercom system,” Dave Dungan told The Californian, as he described what he and his wife found on their security footage.
The incident occurred at about 5 a.m. on Saturday, while Dungan and his wife Sylvia were out of town, when a man appeared on the doorstep of their home located in the 400-block of Hyde Street.
Their ring doorbell notified them of activity near their front door at an unexpected time, and they checked to see what was going on, The Californian Reported.
“I thought, boy there’s a lot of traffic. I go, 5:00 in the morning? My son doesn’t get home till 6:00 a.m. well then who the heck is that?” Sylvia Dungan told KION.
The 33-year-old doorbell licker was later identified by police as Roberto Arroyo.
Arroyo also is believed to have urinated in the front yard of the Dungans’ home and stolen some extension cords off of their Christmas decorations, according to KFMB.
In the video, Arroyo approached the front door and appears to look right at the surveillance camera and then turned and started licking the doorbell.
The video showed Arroyo entering in and out of the frame multiple times between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., according to Salinas Police Public Information Officer Miguel Cabrera.
He said Arroyo only licked the doorbell for a few minutes, not the three hours that was reported by many.
The Dungans shared the bizarre video on social media to warn their neighbors about their creepy nocturnal visitor.
“I thought I’ve seen it all, but this takes the cake,” neighbor Alfred Santos told KION.
Neighbor Stephanie Rosario said “never have we seen anything like this.”
But Dungan said Arroyo didn’t do any real harm.
“You kind of laugh about it afterwards because technically, he didn’t do anything,” Dungan told KION. “This just kind of reinforces how important it is to have security within your home.”
The police located Arroyo and asked him about his behavior but he declined to talk about it, according to The Californian.
He did not have the extension cords with him when police encountered him.
Arroyo could face misdemeanor charges for petty theft and prowling, as well as violations of his probation, according to The Californian.
Police sent the case to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office for consideration, and they will determine if charges should be pressed against Arroyo.
