North Richland Hills, TX – A North Richland Hills Police Department (NRHPD) K9 was shot in the line of duty by a suicidal suspect during a standoff on Monday night.
The incident began at approximately 7:15 p.m., after family members called the Watauga Police Department (WPD) to report that an armed man was threatening suicide, NRHPD Sergeant Melissa Andrews said, according to KXAS.
NRHPD officers responded to the area to assist the WPD.
Officers were able to locate the suspect, who repeatedly brandished a firearm and led police on a pursuit, The Dallas Morning News reported.
It was unclear where exactly the chase began, but the armed man ultimately barricaded himself in a vehicle in the area of Trinidad Drive and Caracas Drive, near Rufe Snow Drive, according to the Star-Telegram.
The suspect refused to comply with the officers’ commands, and a SWAT team was ultimately sent in to assist in the standoff.
Just before 9 p.m., the man got out of the vehicle – weapon in hand – and confronted the officers, at which point they opened fire, The Dallas Morning News reported.
It was unclear whether the suicidal suspect fired at the officers, Sgt. Andrews said, according to KXAS.
The suspect and NRHPD K9 Koba were both wounded during the altercation, but police did not provide additional details regarding how K9 Koba was injured.
The gunman was rushed to John Peter Smith Hospital, and underwent surgery a short while later.
He has since been listed in stable condition, and faces a charge of aggravated assault on a peace officer, KTVT reported.
K9 Koba was transported to a veterinary hospital in Euless, where he underwent surgery.
“K9 Koba did well throughout the surgery and is now recovering from his injuries,” the NRHPD said in a Facebook post on Tuesday morning. “We thank you all for your continued support for K9 Koba and the department.”
