Caldwell County, NC – A man accused of shooting a Caldwell County sheriff’s deputy during a traffic stop on Sunday night was fatally shot by police after he opened fire on officers during a standoff at a residence on Tuesday.

When police received a report of a break in at a residence on Zacks Fork Road on Tuesday afternoon, they suspected the perpetrators may have also been involved in the earlier shooting of 21-year-old Caldwell County Deputy Jordan Sherrill, so they dispatched the SWAT team, WSOC reported.

The team surrounded the home and had begun clearing the residence when the unnamed gunman started shooting at approximately 11:30 p.m., WCNC reported.

“Once they went in a couple rooms, they encountered a subject that had a pistol, and he fired upon the deputies,” Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones told WSOC.

The officers returned fire, fatally shooting the gunman.

Police also apprehended the gunman’s accomplice, Stephanie Sipes, inside the home, WCNC reported.

Sipes has been charged with accessory after the fact in the attempted murder of Deputy Sherrill, and was being held on $1 million bond.

Her initial court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday morning.

It was the conclusion of a multi-day manhunt, which began after Deputy Sherrill initiated a traffic stop on the driver of a blue Toyota sedan in the town of Lenoir at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Sunday, WTVD reported.

The area where the shooting occurred was described as a heavily wooded, rural section of the county, WJZY reported.

The nearest residence was a couple of miles away.

The details of what transpired during the stop were unclear, but culminated when Deputy Sherrill was shot below his ballistic vest, according to WTVD.

The gunman then sped off from the scene.

The deputy, a one-year veteran of the department, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center by air ambulance.

He had emergency surgery and remained in stable condition on Tuesday afternoon, according to WCNC.

Investigators later determined that the suspect vehicle was an early 1990s-model blue Toyota Corolla, with a white male driver and a white female passenger, The Charlotte Observer reported.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations is assisting the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office with the ongoing investigation.
