Aurora, CO – Police shot a homeowner on Monday who had just shot an intruder who broke into his home and attacked his family.

“Officers arrived to a very chaotic and violent scene,” Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz wrote in press release.

Police arrived at the home near East Montview Boulevard and Iola Street at about 1:30 a.m. on July 30 in response to multiple 911 calls reporting that a man had broken into the house, KMGH reported.

Officers who responded heard gunshots as they arrived at the house.

When they encountered an armed man as they entered the home, an officer fatally shot him, KMGH reported.

Chief Metz said that once the scene was clear, police found another man dead in the bathroom and a child who was believed to have been injured by that dead man.

“This is a very heartbreaking and tragic situation for everyone involved. We are providing assistance through our victim advocates to help the family of the deceased resident through this very difficult time,” Chief Metz said.

The child had suffered “serious but non-life-threatening injuries” caused by the intruder and was transported to the hospital, the chief said.

Neighbors told KMGH that an elderly couple lives in the home with the adult daughters and small grandchildren.

The names of the both men who were killed have not been released. The chief said the Adams County Coroner’s Office would be releasing those identities later, according to KMGH.

The Aurora Police Major Crimes Unit, the Denver Police Department, and the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office will be conducting the investigation into the incident.

The Aurora police officer who shot and killed the homeowner has been placed on paid administrative leave as is protocol for all officer-involved shootings, KMGH reported.

Monday morning’s incident was the second fatal shooting in three days for the Aurora Police Department, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

On July 28, police fatally shot a man who had rammed several police vehicles and was driving at officers.
