Madison, WI – With the wind chill temperature at a negative 36 degrees as of 1 p.m. Jan. 30, the Madison Police Department decided to cancel all crime until the weather warmed up.

“Due to the extreme cold and wind, the Madison Police Department is canceling all misdemeanor and felony criminal activities,” the police department posted on its Facebook page. “Criminals, please take note, it is too cold to commit crimes. Stay inside and read, watch Netflix, go on Madison Area Crime Stoppers and help catch other criminals, anything but for the love of polar bears, do not go outside and commit crimes.”

As of 1 p.m. Wednesday, that post was liked 7.7 thousand times and shared 5,249 times on Facebook.

Later, the police department posted a photo of three police officers about to go out in the cold to work in their snow gear and goggles.

“Ready To Hit The Streets!” the department posted on its Facebook page. “You can’t tell, but they’re all smiling.”

The National Weather Service issued a wind chill warning until 10 a.m. Jan. 31. Wind chill temperatures reached 45 degrees below zero Jan. 30 and would reach as low as negative 50 later in the evening.

“The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 5 minutes,” the National Weather Service posted. “Precautionary/preparedness actions … A wind chill warning means the combination of very cold air and the wind will create dangerously low wind chill values. Frostbite can occur quickly and even hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken.”

According to Weather.com, the weather will not be this cold for long. Temperatures in Madison are projected to go from a low of -28 Jan. 30 to a high of 40 by Saturday, a change of 68 degrees within the three-day period.
