Fort Myers, FL – Blood is needed to help the Fort Myers police officer who was shot in the line of duty on Saturday night.

Police have asked for the community’s assistance, and said they are seeking blood donors – preferably O-Negative – for Fort Myers Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller, following emergency surgery for his wounds, WBBH reported.

Fort Myers Police Chief Derrick Diggs held a press conference on Monday afternoon, and said Officer Jobbers-Miller was in “critical but stable” condition.

“Words cannot express the emotions running through the Fort Myers Police family at this time,” Chief Diggs said. “Our department spent the night in anxious anticipation as our comrade and co-worker underwent lifesaving surgery.”

The chief explained that the incident began at about 7:16 p.m. on Saturday when police received a 911 call from a citizen at the Marathon gas station on Martin Luther King.

Chief Diggs said they caller reported having seen someone assault a group of young men, and take a cell phone from their vehicle at the gas station.

Police responded to the scene, but the suspect had already fled, the chief said.

At about 7:19 p.m., he said an officer found a suspect who matched the description on Flint Drive.

The suspect fled, and Officer Jobbers-Miller “was shot and wounded while he was attempting to take suspect into custody after a brief foot pursuit,” Chief Diggs said.

Officer Jobbers-Miller was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital,

At that point, the suspect fled back to the original Marathon gas station location “where he was taken into custody following an officer-involved shooting,” the chief said.

Witnesses positively identified Wisner Desmaret as the suspect involved in the initial incident at the gas station, he said.

The chief stressed there was no need further concern by the community.

“We got our guy. We got our man,” Chief Diggs said.

The chief asked for the community’s assistance and said they wanted to talk to anyone who had witnessed or filmed the incidents on Saturday night, and also anyone who had contact with Desmaret recently.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement was conducting the investigation into the officer-involved shooting and the crime scene, and Fort Myers detectives were investigating the criminal case against Desmaret, he said.

Lee County sheriff’s deputies, the Cape Coral PD, and the Florida Highway Patrol assisted at the scene on July 21.

Officer Jobbers-Miller joined the Fort Myers Police Department in September of 2015. He’d previously served as a volunteer firefighter in Wayne, New Jersey, where his father was chief of the fire department for at least 30 years, the New-Press reported.
