Dinwiddie, VA – Police have arrested a teenaged cheerleader’s 21-year-old cousin in connection with her murder.

Ke’Asia Adkins, 17, was missing for three days after she failed to arrive at varsity cheerleading practice at Dinwiddie High School on Monday, according to the New York Post.

Her family last saw her at about 9 a.m. on June 25 as she left for school from her home in North Dinwiddie. They said she was a very responsible girl who never went off the radar without alerting somebody.

“Sometime Monday morning her phone went dead,” her sister Kendra Green told WTVR while the search for the missing teen was underway. “Since, no response and straight to voicemail.”

“This is not in her character at all to disappear,” Green said. “If she’s even going to be 10 minutes late she calls and texts my mom to let her know what’s the situation.”

Police launched a search for the missing cheerleader, and her high school community helped, WTVR reported.

The cheerleading squad and their family members went door-to-door in the community with flyers featuring a picture of their missing classmate.

Adkins’ mother, Vikisha Smith-Mallory, took to social media to publicize her daughter’s disappearance, and invited “all prayer warriors” who engaged with her online to attend a prayer vigil that was held on Wednesday evening, the New York Post reported.

Unfortunately, they learned all of their efforts were for naught after police found the missing teenager’s body in a wooded area behind the family home early Thursday morning, WSET reported.

Authorities transported the cheerleader’s body to the state medical examiner’s office where a coroner declared her death a homicide, and said the cause of death was asphyxia, WWBT reported.

Police have arrested Adkins’ cousin, Anton Deonte Coleman, and charged him with abduction, according to NTD.

The school administration announced that grief counselors would be on hand at the school to help students in the wake of Adkins’ death, and released a school spirit-filled statement about the rising junior who had just become a member of the varsity cheer squad, WWBT reported.

“The Dinwiddie High School community suffered a tragic loss on June 28 when rising junior and Varsity Cheerleader Ke’Asia Adkins died. It is a very sad day for Dinwiddie High School,” the statement read. “The thoughts and prayers of the entire Dinwiddie County Public Schools’ community go out to her family. Ke’Asia was a beautiful young lady who was a General through and through. She will be greatly missed by the entire Dinwiddie High School family, especially her friends, teammates, teachers and staff.”
