Sandusky, Ohio – A Planet Fitness employee launched a profane tirade at a customer wearing a shirt memorializing a police officer shot and killed in the line of duty.
Carolyn Demore, who said she was in a police academy, was wearing a remembrance shirt of Officer Andrew Dunn, who was shot and killed in 2011 while working for the Sandusky Police Department.
She said that she went to Planet Fitness on August 18 and while she was waiting for an employee to sign her in, a Planet Fitness employee noticed her shirt and approached her.
The employee told her, “I hate your shirt. I hate the police. F*** them. … That’s the dumbest shirt ever.”
Demore said she told the employee that her shirt was in honor of a police officer murdered while on-duty.
“Good for him, I don’t like you either,” the employee responded.
Later while he saw Demore in the gym, the employee yelled at her, “F— twelve!” “Twleve” is slang for police.
“I’ve lost absolutely all respect for Planet Fitness I wanted nothing but to tan, workout, and go home,” Demore wrote on her Facebook post. “I cut my workout short and left. I’ve never been approached like this before and I’m sure I’ll have plenty more encounters with people that don’t like law enforcement, so thank you for being one more person to prepare me on how to deal with those encounters.”
Planet Fitness confirmed that the employee did insult Demore and and law enforcement. That employee has been fired and prohibited from returning to Planet Fitness.
“Planet Fitness is committed to maintaining a welcoming and safe environment for our members and staff,” Planet Fitness spokeswoman Becky Zirlen said. “We are aware of the alleged incident and can confirm that the employee is no longer employed at the club. We take matters like this extremely seriously and are looking into it further.”
Officer Dunn was shot and killed in 2011 when the suspect he was attempting to question opened fire and shot him five times, according to Officer Down Memorial Page.
Officer Dunn was able to return fire and hit his killer twice in the arm. The killer was later captured and convicted of Officer Dunn’s murder. He was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole.
Officer Dunn, 30, served three years with the Sandusky Police Department and left behind a wife and two sons.
